Black Friday Beer Review

Posted on November 23, 2012 by Lazyjack Press

What:     Peeper Ale

When:    Thanksgiving Day 2012

Where:    Reynard - Williamsburg - NYC

Rating:    8/10

Review:   This is a classic American ale.  Brewed in Maine by the Maine Beer Company, it's a hoppy, refreshing choice perfect for a post-Thanksgiving decompression session.  Its pine and citrus notes do a good job cutting that Stovetop stuffing you overdid.  It's got a sticky, substantial head, and it's dangerously drinkable.  Overall, a solid choice!

Thanksgiving Day is Fast Approaching!

Posted on November 20, 2012 by Lazyjack Press

Thanksgiving is a few days away! Time for family, friends and tons of food! Since we’ll all be spending the day eating (and drinking) our faces off, I decided a few cocktails on the lighter side might be in order.

These cocktails all  have one thing in common: Saint Germain. If you don’t own it, get it. It’s a light lychee/pear liqueur that goes well with so many wines, liquors, and champagnes. It’s super light and will be refreshing with all of the heavy holiday food.

I opted for simple recipes this time so you’re free to wrangle the turkey, extinguish the flames in the oven, and maybe even impress the in-laws. Hey, it may help you stay sane too.

So, happy Thanksgiving – let’s make it a great one this year!!

1) Cucumber/Mint Champagne cocktail

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, then add:

3/4 champagne or prosecco

A few mint leaves

A few slices of cucumber

Top it all off with a splash of Saint Germain - a little goes a long way!

2) The Saint Germain cocktail

Fill a highball glass with ice, and add:

2 parts champagne or prosecco

1 part Saint Germain

2 parts club soda

Garnish with a lemon twist

Note: the above recipe also works with a nice white wine like a Sauvignon Blanc!

3) Or, I’d just skip the club soda and put the prosecco/champagne with Saint Germain in a champagne flute.

4) Sparkling Lychee:

In a champagne flute:

Add a lychee fruit

Fill the glass with champagne/prosecco

Top off with Saint Germain

Beer Review: Coney Island Lager

Posted on November 15, 2012 by Lazyjack Press

What:     Coney Island Lager

When:      November 2012

Where:      The Back Room, down an alley you think you'll be mugged in, New York, NY

Rating:      7/10

Review:

The Back Room is the coolest bar ever.  Well, not really, but it is pretty great.  You walk down an alley past a sign, something about New York Toy Company, up some stairs, and knock on a door.  A man with a twisty moustache answers the door and reluctantly lets you in.  Drinks are served in tea and coffee cups.  It's weird drinking beer from a coffee mug, but Coney Island's lager held up pretty well.  It's a true American craft beer, and the balance of hops and malt make for an interesting but not overwhelming flavor profile.  It's light but not too light, and it finishes clean.  Overall, not too shabby, and a good addition to the repertoire.

Beer Review

What:     Schöfferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen

When:      October 2012

Where:      Food & Wine Festival, Epcot, Disneyworld

Rating:      1/10

Review:

Ding ding ding!  Friends, we have our first negative beer review.  At the outset, I'm no professional -- just a fan -- I don't know the technical differences between Hefeweizen and Lager.  That said, I can say this grapefruit beer is barely even beer.  It's 2.5% ABV, so you'll need a 30 to get the party started.  It's bitter.  It tastes like grapefruit Orangina.  It's refreshing on one hand, but for my money and calories, I'll grab a Keystoneweizen over a grapefruit beer any day.

#Frankenstorm, the Fireworks are Hailing over Little Eden Tonight . . .

Posted on October 28, 2012 by Lazyjack Press

Count this as the only hurricane preparedness guide you'll need to survive and thrive during this Frankenstorm of all Nor'Eastercanes.  Lazyjack Press is holed up on Central Park South, smack in between Whole Foods Columbus Circle and a go-to liquor store, the owner of which lives inside the store and won't close, no matter what hellstorm arrives on Manhattan's shores.

What you'll need:

1)  Tequila: Espolon is pretty good for the price, so get two or three depending on how many shut-ins you'll be entertaining.  Add chipotle, honey, and lime.
2)  Bloody Marys: see Miriam's post on the ultimate bloody, supra.  Except this time, add onion powder.  Quick!  Go get it!
3)  Magnums of French red table wine -- we dig the Cuvee Des Chevaliers ($16)
4)  Corona Light with lime
5)  Heineken Light -- no lime necessary
6)  Prosciutto with melon
7)  Tomato and buffalo mozzarella with balsamic glaze -- add toothpicks and you're civilized
8)  Strawberries
9)  Pretzels with Maille mustard dipping sauce
10)  Crudité -- yellow Zima tomatoes, carrots, celery, cauliflower, sugar snap peas, Hidden Valley ranch (essential that it's Hidden Valley)
11)  Cornichon pickles

Great friends, movies, Halloween, football, World Series, and a giant storm that lets you out of work?  Ace.  just ace.  Stay safe!  Cheers!
