The Deliberate Life: Happy Hour

Posted on August 18, 2013 by Lazyjack Press

Happy hour?

Happy hour is great in moderation, killer in excess.  Too many PBR-swigging, happy (five) hours slowly drain your checking account, fill your gut with wings and beer, and zap your energy the next day.  It's so easy to get dragged in by the happy hour sirens' song.  Here's the temptation: it's 3:00 on a Wednesday - what else do you have to look forward to?  Guy's night sounds good.  A couple of cold ones at the local dive.  A little "me" time. Great idea!  But it's not (at least in the long term).  Here's the answer: get a hobby.  Seriously.  Exercise at night.  Trade bond futures.  Write a blog that will appeal to advertisers and make money.  Steam your clothes for the next day.  Make dinner with your girlfriend or wife.  Organize yourself.  Get your life together.  You'll feel better the next morning when you check your bank account, your gut, and your not-aching head.  Space things out.  Do a bi-weekly happy hour with your college buddies (and even that's ambitious).  You'll have more to catch up on for a higher-quality hangout anyway.

No More Wire Hangers!

No More Wire Hangers!

First in our series on Deliberate Living, we're just saying it.  Wire hangers are the worst.  They stretch your jackets, shirts, and sweaters in weird places, look awful, and are generally useless.  Just try to fold a pair of pants onto a wire hanger.  They basically kick you in the face and plant themselves to the floor. There's an easy solution to this, and it'll make your life easier and better.  Buy inexpensive wooden hangers.  Target sells 24-packs of them for $30.  They'll last years, class up the joint for the ladies, and, I swear, inspire you to live more deliberately.  And you can go ahead and ask your dry cleaner to fold your shirts and sweaters and skip the wasted, piece-of-garbage hanger for the next schlub.

The Deliberate Life

Posted on July 29, 2013 by Lazyjack Press

Living life deliberately is that last piece of the pre-30 puzzle.  It's about living on purpose and with purpose.  Allocating your time precisely.  Aiming your energy like a heat-seeking missile on the people and things in life that matter. Developing good habits.  Sweating the small stuff, because the small stuff is usually what effs up an otherwise good day.  It's about putting your train ticket in your left jacket pocket, every morning, so you know exactly where it is.  Fixing things - fixing relationships - right away.  It's about saying no to things you don't want to do.  Communicating with your girlfriend.   Drinking like a grown-up. Drinking like your hair's on fire, but like a grown-up with his hair on fire.  It's about taking care of your stuff.  Putting your clothes away when you get home.  Steaming your suit.  Shoe trees.  Balanced checkbooks.  A picture on the wall.  Automatic savings deductions.  To-do lists, Outlook calendars, and quickly-answered e-mails.  The Deliberate Life is life lived well.  So, good readers, this is the start.  This is the first in a series of blog posts designed to make our lives easier, more organized, and more fun.  We'll live the Deliberate Life together, right here on the Lazyjack Press blog.

Cocktail Recipe du Jour: Fresh Strawberry Margarita

Posted on March 29, 2013 by Lazyjack Press

Puxatony Phil said spring is in the air, and even though it's still a little frigid out, I choose to believe that pesky little critter that winter is almost over. And nothing says spring or party better than a margarita! I whipped up some fresh strawberry margs, which have considerably less calories and sugar than their restaurant counterparts (Bathing suit season is fast approaching -- you're welcome) Also, as an added bonus, they're super easy to make!

So arriba arriba and happy spring!

What you'll need: Note serves 3-4 ppl

Blender
8-12 ice cubes
Splash of agave
7-10 strawberries
8 shots of tequila - preferably blanco
Juice of one lime

To a blender, add the ingredients and blend! For a garnish, a strawberry or piece of lime works well (extra points for an umbrella!) I also like to add a spicy salt/sugar/cayenne pepper rim to balance out the sweetness of the strawberries.
