Best Burgers in the USA

Posted on September 03, 2014 by Miriam Zelinsky

(Pictured: Minetta's Black Label Burger)

Zagat just came out with their list of the best burgers in NYC. We were definitely intrigued.

Here's the list. It's fine but predictable, although it's worth noting that if you've been avoiding it because it's too trendy, Minetta's Black Label Burger does justify the hype. Just make sure to get the marrow if it's being offered when you're there.

A better list, of course, is still Alan Richman's classic lineup from 2006. New York burgers are numbers 2 (Luger), 9 (Burger Joint), and 14 (J.G. Melon). But really, I think we all trust trust Alan Richman enough to travel to Hollywood, Florida, if he says it has the best burger in America.

Cocktail Recipe du Jour: Boozy Strawberry Basil Lemonade

Posted on August 28, 2014 by Miriam Zelinsky

Ice cold lemonade is one of my favorite drinks for a hot summer day, so, I decided to use lemonade as a base for this cocktail. I also love fresh strawberries in the summer so I decided to incorporate them as well. I used vodka, but I've tasted this recipe with bourbon and tequila, so feel free to customize the recipe with the liquor of your choice. This recipe is so tasty and refreshing – and guaranteed to sneak up on you after a day of boozing. It's also a great recipe to multiply for a party/bbq!
Cheers!
What You'll Need:
4-6 strawberries
4-6 leaves of fresh basil
3 oz of lemonade (bonus points for fresh squeezed)
Optional: simple syrup or sweetener to taste -- I omit this part since there's sugar in the lemonade already.
2 oz of vodka or liquor of your choice
What To Do:
1) Add the strawberries and basil to a shaker and muddle.
2) Add the liquor and lemonade to the mixture and shake well.
3) Pour the drink over in a glass with ice or strain in a martini glass.
4) Garnish with a strawberry and basil leaf.

The Chicken Fried Bloody Beast

Posted on August 11, 2014 by Lazyjack Press

Thanks, Thrillist for reporting on this ultimate Bloody Mary!

Thrillist wrote about Sobelman's in Milwaukee who invented the most awe-inspiring Bloody. Seriously.

Besides the actual bloody part, it includes: olive, onion, pickle, cheese, sausage, asparagus, scallion, shrimp, tomato, celery, brussels sprouts, two skewers of bacon-wrapped jalapeño cheese balls, and a WHOLE fried chicken.

This sucker will set you back $50, but $5 will go to charity. We are definitely sold. Has anyone tried this sucker?

Cocktail Recipe du Jour: Jealous Mary

Posted on July 30, 2014 by Lazyjack Press

As you all probably know by now, we're huge fans of the Bloody Mary and I get excited about any variations I come across. I found this recipe while watching Rachel Ray one morning. I really loved the idea of using grilled green tomatoes instead of regular tomato juice as a base. The tomatoes only took a few minutes to grill, yet had a sweet and smokey taste, which was nice. What's nice is this drink isn't too labor intensive and can be made ahead of time. There's no reason for this drink to be green with envy – it's definitely a go-to this summer while green tomatoes are in season!

Cheers!

What You'll Need: Serves 2

3 green tomatoes

Lime

Tabasco (about 10-20 dashes depending on how spicy you like it!)

Worcestershire Sauce (15 dashes)

Horseradish (2 table spoons)

Black Pepper

Bonus: Throw some cocktail onions and/or olives on the grill as a garnish.

What To Do:

1) Start out by slicing the tomatoes and throwing them on the grill. Leave one raw (it adds a nice tangy flavor to the sweet smokey tomatoes).

2) Add the tomatoes grilled and raw tomatoes to a blender along with the Worcestershire Sauce, Tabasco, horseradish, black pepper and the juice from one lime.

3) Blend until smooth and pour the contents of the blender into 2 high ball glasses with ice and your favorite vodka.

Cocktail Recipe Du Jour: Watermelon Keg

Posted on July 16, 2014 by Lazyjack Press

Watermelon is one of my favorite fruits. Any cocktail that calls for it is an automatic go-to for me in the summer. I came across this  recipe for a watermelon keg on Pinterest and couldn't resist sharing. Yes, you read it correctly: a watermelon keg! The best part about this recipe is you can use ANY type of liquor you want.

Click here to see how to attach the spigot to the watermelon.
After, just blend the watermelon flesh with 4-7 cups of your favorite liquor. You can even get fancy and add lime juice, mint (even ginger beer).
Cheers!
